Applications of Galden® HT 200

Galden® HT 200 is an inert, dielectric PFPE heat-transfer fluid with a nominal boiling point of 200°C. Within the Galden® HT series, it offers a practical balance between elevated-temperature capability, low volatility and easier circulation than the higher-boiling HT 230 and HT 270 grades.

1. High-Temperature Semiconductor Process Control

Galden® HT 200 can be used in temperature-control units serving semiconductor fabrication equipment where accurate and stable wafer-process temperatures are required. Relevant processes include dry etching, chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition and other thermally demanding fabrication operations.

Its dielectric properties, low vapor pressure and resistance to chemical, thermal and oxidative degradation make it suitable for thermal circuits operating near sensitive electronics and aggressive process environments.

Why HT 200: It provides a higher operating-temperature margin than HT 170 without requiring the higher viscosity associated with HT 230 or HT 270.

2. Specialty Chemical Reactor Temperature Control

Galden® HT 200 can be used in closed thermal circuits connected to jacketed reactors, process vessels and pilot-plant equipment. It is particularly relevant when the process requires elevated temperatures but conventional hydrocarbon thermal fluids introduce flammability, oxidation or chemical-compatibility concerns.

Syensqo identifies chemical processing as an intended application for the Galden® HT family. HT 200 also offers resistance to acids, alkalis, alcohols, fuels, detergents, glycol and mineral or synthetic oils.

Why HT 200: Its approximately 200°C boiling point is well matched to medium-high-temperature chemical processes that do not require the full temperature capability of HT 230 or HT 270.

3. Pharmaceutical Synthesis and Process Skids

Galden® HT 200 can be considered for closed heat-transfer systems serving pharmaceutical synthesis vessels, reaction skids and specialized temperature-controlled processing equipment.

Its chemical inertness, non-flammability and low moisture absorption are beneficial where predictable thermal control, process safety and equipment cleanliness are important. Syensqo specifically includes pharmaceutical processing among the demanding applications for Galden® HT fluids.

Why HT 200: It is suited to pharmaceutical processes requiring significantly higher temperatures than HT 135 or HT 170, while avoiding the additional pumping resistance of HT 230 and HT 270.

4. High-Temperature Thermal-Control Units and Calibration Systems

Galden® HT 200 is suitable for specialized recirculating thermal-control units used in research laboratories, component qualification, industrial calibration and pilot-scale manufacturing.

The fluid’s dielectric behavior allows thermal control near electrically energized equipment. Its high-boiling nature also helps reduce evaporation compared with lower-boiling HT grades. Syensqo identifies recirculating chillers and electronic testing equipment among the applications for Galden® HT fluids.

Why HT 200: It provides a useful middle point for systems that must circulate efficiently across a broad temperature range but also approach approximately 190°C in unpressurized single-phase operation.

5. Fuel-Cell Manufacturing and Thermal Testing

Galden® HT fluids can be used as dielectric heat-transfer media in fuel-cell manufacturing and testing because they combine thermal stability, chemical inertness and the absence of flash and fire points.

For high-temperature fuel-cell components, test fixtures or production equipment, HT 200 can provide controlled heat transfer without introducing an electrically conductive or combustible liquid into the test environment.

Why HT 200: It is better aligned with elevated-temperature fuel-cell test conditions than low-boiling HT 55–HT 135 grades, while remaining easier to circulate than HT 230 or HT 270.

Frequently Asked Questions About Galden® HT 200

1. What is the maximum operating temperature of Galden® HT 200?

Galden® HT 200 has a nominal boiling point of 200°C. Syensqo recommends that, in an unpressurized single-phase circulation system, the fluid boiling point should be at least 10°C above the highest operating temperature.

This gives HT 200 a general upper single-phase operating guideline of approximately 190°C. Actual limits depend on system pressure, flow rate, vapor containment, pump capability and heat-exchanger design.

2. How does Galden® HT 200 differ from HT 170, HT 230 and HT 270?

HT 200 occupies a balanced position within the high-boiling Galden® range: HT 200 is generally selected when HT 170 does not provide sufficient boiling margin, but HT 230 or HT 270 would add unnecessary viscosity or cost to the thermal circuit. The final selection should consider viscosity at the minimum temperature and vapor pressure at the maximum temperature.

3. Can Galden® HT 200 be used for vapor-phase soldering?

Galden® HT 200 may technically support specialized vapor-phase heating because Galden® HT fluids are listed for vapor-phase heating applications. However, it should not automatically be selected for printed-circuit-board vapor-phase soldering.

Syensqo specifically develops Galden® LS and HS fluids for vapor-phase soldering. These grades have narrow molecular-weight distributions and controlled boiling temperatures designed for repeatable soldering profiles.

For PCB soldering, the appropriate Galden® LS or HS grade should normally be evaluated instead of HT 200.

4. Does Galden® HT 200 cause corrosion or leave decomposition residue?

Under normal operating conditions, Galden® PFPE fluids are chemically inert and do not normally corrode metals or produce significant decomposition residue.

System corrosion is more commonly associated with a separate water phase or fluid exposure above its thermal-decomposition range. Syensqo states that degradation generally begins around 290–300°C, significantly above HT 200’s normal single-phase operating range.

Moisture control, heater protection and avoidance of localized overheating remain essential for reliable system operation.

5. What should be checked before replacing another heat-transfer fluid with Galden® HT 200?

Galden® HT 200 should not be treated as a drop-in replacement based only on boiling point. Engineers should compare:

Viscosity at the lowest operating temperature
Vapor pressure at the highest operating temperature
Pump flow and pressure capability
Heat-transfer and pressure-drop factors
Expansion volume and vapor management
Seal, gasket, hose and construction-material compatibility
Fluid density and system fill quantity

Syensqo recommends selecting a Galden® grade primarily according to pumpability at the lowest temperature and vapor pressure at the highest temperature. Compatible materials include many commonly used metals, plastics and elastomers, although actual components should be tested under representative temperatures and thermal cycles.

HT 200’s Distinct Position in the Galden® HT Series

Galden® HT 200 is best positioned as the balanced medium-high-temperature grade in the high-boiling HT range. It provides greater temperature capability and lower evaporation than HT 170, while generally offering easier circulation than HT 230 and especially HT 270.
