What Is Fomblin® Y LVAC 14/6?
Fomblin® Y LVAC 14/6 is a medium-viscosity perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluid designed for sealing and lubricating compatible mechanical vacuum pumps. Its low vapor pressure, chemical inertness, thermal stability and non-flammable properties make it suitable for vacuum processes where conventional hydrocarbon oils may oxidize, degrade or contribute to chamber contamination.
Key Features and Process Benefits
| Key feature | Process and customer benefit |
|---|---|
| Very low vapor pressure | Helps reduce lubricant evaporation and backstreaming into the vacuum chamber. |
| Medium viscosity of 148 cSt at 20°C | Provides a stable lubricating and sealing film without the higher flow resistance of more viscous Y LVAC grades. |
| Chemical inertness | Resists many acids, alkalis, solvents, oxidizers and aggressive process gases. |
| High thermal stability | Helps maintain lubricant properties under elevated operating temperatures. |
| Oxidation resistance | Does not oxidize like conventional hydrocarbon oils, helping reduce sludge and varnish formation. |
| Non-flammable PFPE chemistry | Has no flash, fire or autoignition point under standard test conditions. |
| Low evaporation loss | May reduce fluid consumption and help maintain consistent pump performance. |
| Good lubricating properties | Helps reduce friction and wear in compatible rotary vacuum pumps. |
| Effective sealing performance | Supports the internal fluid seal required by compatible oil-sealed mechanical pumps. |
| Resistance to aggressive gases | Suitable for demanding chemical and high-technology vacuum processes, subject to compatibility assessment. |
| Reduced hydrocarbon contamination | Helps support cleaner chambers and contamination-sensitive production processes. |
| Good material compatibility | Compatible with many metals, glass, ceramics, plastics and elastomers used in vacuum systems. |
| High dielectric properties | Offers electrical-insulation characteristics for electronics and high-technology environments. |
| Long storage stability | Fomblin® PFPE fluids have a reported shelf life exceeding 20 years when stored appropriately. |

Common Applications of Fomblin® Y LVAC 14/6
Rotary vacuum pumps
Fomblin® Y LVAC 14/6 is primarily intended as a sealing and lubricating fluid for compatible oil-sealed rotary vacuum pumps. Its medium viscosity helps maintain an effective internal seal while lubricating vanes and other moving components.
Semiconductor and electronics manufacturing
Vacuum pumps in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing may be exposed to reactive gases and strict contamination limits. The low volatility and chemical stability of Y LVAC 14/6 can support compatible pumps used in plasma processing, vacuum deposition, etching and process-chamber evacuation.
The suitability of the grade must be confirmed for the specific pump, process chemistry and operating temperature.
Chemical-processing vacuum systems
Conventional hydrocarbon oils may oxidize, polymerize or form deposits when exposed to corrosive and oxidizing chemicals. Fomblin® Y LVAC 14/6 can be considered for compatible rotary pumps handling acids, halogens, oxidizers, solvents and other aggressive gases.
Published Syensqo data demonstrate PFPE resistance to a broad range of chemical agents, but the exact substance, concentration, temperature and system materials must still be evaluated.
Oxygen and oxidizing-gas systems
Fomblin® PFPE fluids are non-flammable and have been approved for use in specified oxygen applications. However, changing the lubricant alone does not make a pump suitable for oxygen service.
The pump must be properly cleaned, free from incompatible hydrocarbon residues and approved for the intended oxygen concentration, pressure and temperature.
Clean and contamination-sensitive processes
The low vapor pressure of Y LVAC 14/6 helps limit oil-vapor backstreaming into the vacuum chamber. This can benefit compatible systems used in electronics, analytical instruments, laboratory equipment, optical processing and other applications where hydrocarbon contamination must be controlled.
Roughing pumps for high-vacuum systems
Y LVAC 14/6 may also be used in a compatible mechanical roughing pump supporting a high-vacuum system. Using a PFPE fluid in the roughing pump can help reduce the migration of hydrocarbon vapors toward downstream vacuum equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Fomblin® Y LVAC 14/6 mainly used for?
It is primarily used as a sealing and lubricating fluid in compatible rotary vacuum pumps.
Why choose Y LVAC 14/6 instead of 06/6?
Y LVAC 14/6 provides a thicker lubricating and sealing film. Y LVAC 06/6 flows more easily and may be preferable where lower viscosity or colder start-up conditions are required.
How long does it last in a vacuum pump?
There is no fixed replacement interval. Service life depends on operating temperature, process gases, contamination, pump condition and maintenance. Fluid condition and pump performance should be checked regularly.
What is its shelf life?
Syensqo reports a shelf life of more than 20 years for properly stored Fomblin® PFPE fluids.
What information is needed before ordering?
Provide the pump manufacturer and model, current lubricant, required viscosity, operating temperature, target vacuum level, process gases, seal materials and any oxygen-service or cleanliness requirements.
