Highlights of Fomblin® Y 25

What Is Fomblin® Y 25?

Fomblin® Y 25 is a medium-viscosity perfluoropolyether lubricant developed for industrial applications where conventional mineral oils, hydrocarbon lubricants or standard synthetic fluids may be affected by high temperatures, aggressive chemicals, oxygen exposure or flammability risks.

Key Features and Process Benefits of Fomblin® Y 25

Key feature Technical function Process and customer benefit
PFPE-based formulation Resists oxidation and chemical attack more effectively than conventional hydrocarbon oils Helps maintain lubricant performance in chemically aggressive or oxidizing environments
Excellent high-temperature stability Reduces degradation, sludge formation and carbonaceous deposits at elevated temperatures Supports cleaner equipment, longer service intervals and more consistent operation
Approximate ISO VG 100 viscosity Provides a medium-viscosity lubricating film for loaded mechanical components Offers a useful balance between wear protection, oil mobility and mechanical resistance
Non-flammable Has no flash point, fire point or autoignition point under standard test conditions Improves fire safety in high-temperature, oxygen-rich or ignition-sensitive processes
Inert to liquid and gaseous oxygen Does not oxidize in the same way as hydrocarbon lubricants Suitable for properly engineered and cleaned oxygen-service components
Chemical and solvent resistance Remains stable in contact with many aggressive gases, acids, alkalis and organic chemicals Reduces the risk of lubricant breakdown, contamination or unexpected viscosity changes
Low evaporation loss Limits lubricant loss during prolonged exposure to heat Supports longer lubricant life and reduces the frequency of replenishment
Broad material compatibility Compatible with many metals, glasses, ceramics, plastics and elastomers Simplifies integration into assemblies containing multiple engineering materials
Good dielectric properties Provides low dielectric constant and high electrical resistivity typical of PFPE fluids Useful around electrical, electronic and electromechanical components requiring insulating behavior
Low surface tension Enables the oil to spread across precision surfaces and small mechanical interfaces Supports uniform lubrication of fine mechanisms and difficult-to-reach contact areas

Common Applications of Fomblin® Y 25

High-Temperature Bearings and Mechanical Components

Fomblin® Y 25 can be used for bearings, guides, sliding surfaces and mechanical components exposed to elevated temperatures where conventional oils may oxidize, form sludge or leave carbon deposits.

Its ISO VG 100-type viscosity makes it particularly relevant to medium-speed components requiring a stable lubricating film rather than an extremely low-viscosity oil.

Oxygen and Reactive-Gas Equipment

The Fomblin® PFPE family is inert to liquid and gaseous oxygen and is used in oxygen and chlorine valves and pumping systems. Fomblin® Y 25 may therefore be considered for properly designed oxygen-service valves, regulators, fittings and mechanical components.

Oxygen service requires strict removal of hydrocarbon contamination. The lubricant, component materials, cleaning process and operating conditions must comply with the relevant oxygen-system safety standards.

Chemical Processing Equipment

Fomblin® Y 25 is suitable for lubricating components exposed to aggressive chemicals, solvents, acids, alkalis, halogens or reactive process gases. Typical examples include valve mechanisms, actuator components, bearings, seals and instruments used in chemical production systems.

Syensqo reports compatibility of Fomblin® PFPE fluids with numerous chemical agents, including halogens, hydrogen halides, mineral acids, alkalis, oxidizing solutions and common organic solvents under specified test conditions.

Electronics and Electrical Mechanisms

Because PFPE oils provide dielectric behavior, chemical cleanliness and low volatility, Fomblin® Y 25 may be used for selected electrical contacts, electromechanical mechanisms, semiconductor equipment and precision electronic assemblies.

Typical PFPE applications include gold-contact surface lubrication and instrument lubrication. The selected oil quantity must be carefully controlled to prevent migration into areas where lubricant is not required.

Automotive and Transportation Components

Fomblin® PFPE lubricants are used in automotive mechanisms where long life, chemical resistance or stable performance is required. Examples cited by the manufacturer include anti-lock braking systems and gasoline-tank floats.

Fomblin® Y 25 may also be considered for sensors, actuators, valves and sealed mechanical components where an ISO VG 100-type PFPE oil is appropriate.

Precision Instruments and Lubricated-for-Life Assemblies

Low volatility, oxidation resistance and long-term stability make Fomblin® Y 25 suitable for precision instruments, enclosed mechanisms and assemblies intended to operate for extended periods without routine relubrication.

Possible applications include sintered bearings, adjustment mechanisms, laboratory instruments and lifetime-sealed bearings exposed to heat, moisture or aggressive substances.

Vacuum-Related Mechanisms

Fomblin® Y 25 can be considered for selected mechanical components operating near vacuum systems, particularly where chemical inertness and low evaporation are required.

However, it is not automatically interchangeable with Fomblin® Y LVAC vacuum-pump oils. For rotary vacuum pumps, high-vacuum systems or processes handling aggressive gases, the dedicated Fomblin® Y LVAC or HVAC grade should normally be evaluated according to the required vapor pressure, pump design and ultimate vacuum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fomblin® Y 25 used for?

Fomblin® Y 25 is a PFPE lubricant used in demanding automotive, electronics, semiconductor, oxygen and gas applications requiring chemical resistance, thermal stability and non-flammable performance.

What is the difference between Fomblin® Y 25 and Fomblin® Y LVAC 25/6?

Fomblin® Y 25 is a general-purpose PFPE lubricating oil, while Y LVAC 25/6 is specifically designed as a low-vapor-pressure sealing and working fluid for compatible vacuum pumps. They should not be treated as interchangeable products without technical evaluation.

Is Fomblin® Y 25 compatible with seals, plastics and metals?

Fomblin® PFPE oils have broad compatibility with metals, glass, ceramics and many plastics and elastomers. Syensqo lists compatibility with materials including nitrile rubber, butyl rubber, fluorosilicone, EPDM, polyolefins, polyamides and polycarbonates.

Is Fomblin® Y 25 food-grade approved?

Syensqo lists Fomblin® Y 25 for NSF H1, H2, HX-1 and HX-2 intended uses. Users should verify the latest registration and applicable contact limitations before use in food-processing equipment.

How long does Fomblin® Y 25 last?

Lubricant life depends on temperature, speed, load, contamination and operating environment. Syensqo reports a shelf life of more than 20 years for properly stored Fomblin® PFPE fluids.
