Highlights of Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6

What Is Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6?

Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6 is a low-viscosity perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluid designed for lubricating and sealing compatible vacuum pumps. It combines low vapor pressure, chemical inertness, non-flammability and good low-temperature flow, making it suitable for vacuum systems where conventional hydrocarbon oils may degrade, oxidize or introduce process contamination.

Key Features and Process Benefits of Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6

Key feature Process and customer benefit
Low vapor pressure Helps reduce lubricant evaporation and backstreaming into the vacuum chamber.
Low-viscosity PFPE fluid Supports easier circulation, lower starting resistance and efficient lubrication in compatible pump designs.
Chemical inertness Resists many acids, alkalis, oxidizers, solvents and reactive process gases.
Non-flammable performance Has no flash point, fire point or autoignition point under standard test conditions.
High thermal stability Helps maintain fluid performance in vacuum systems exposed to elevated operating temperatures.
Oxidation resistance Does not oxidize like conventional hydrocarbon oils, helping reduce sludge, varnish and carbonaceous deposits.
Low pour point Remains flowable at relatively low temperatures, supporting cold start-up and circulation.
Good lubricating properties Provides lubrication and sealing for compatible vacuum-pump components.
Resistance to aggressive gases Suitable for pumps handling corrosive, oxidizing or chemically reactive gases, subject to system evaluation.
Low hydrocarbon contamination Helps support clean vacuum processes where hydrocarbon migration must be minimized.
Material compatibility Compatible with many metals, glass, ceramics, plastics and elastomers used in vacuum equipment.
High dielectric properties Offers electrical-insulation characteristics for electrically sensitive production environments.
Low surface tension Promotes wetting and distribution of the fluid across internal pump surfaces.
Long storage stability Fomblin® PFPE fluids have a reported shelf life exceeding 20 years under suitable storage conditions.

Common Applications of Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6

Mechanical and rotary vacuum pumps

Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6 is primarily used as a sealing and lubricating fluid in compatible mechanical vacuum pumps. Its relatively low viscosity may be beneficial in pumps requiring rapid oil circulation, lower starting resistance or effective operation at reduced ambient temperatures. Syensqo describes the Y LVAC range as sealing and working fluids for vacuum pumps, including equipment handling aggressive gases.

Semiconductor and electronics production

Vacuum pumps used in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing may encounter corrosive gases and strict contamination limits. Y LVAC 06/6 can help reduce hydrocarbon backstreaming while resisting chemical degradation in properly designed and qualified systems.

Potential processes include plasma treatment, vacuum deposition, etching, electronic-component manufacturing and process-chamber evacuation. Suitability must be confirmed for the specific equipment and process chemistry.

Chemical-processing vacuum systems

The product can be considered for vacuum pumps exposed to acids, halogens, oxidizers and other aggressive chemicals that may rapidly degrade conventional mineral or synthetic hydrocarbon oils. Fomblin® PFPE fluids are documented as resistant to a broad range of aggressive gases and chemical agents.

Oxygen and oxidizing-gas systems

PFPE fluids are non-flammable and inert to liquid and gaseous oxygen, making them candidates for approved oxygen and oxidizing-gas systems. However, using PFPE fluid alone does not make a pump suitable for oxygen service. The equipment must be oxygen-clean, correctly configured and approved for the relevant pressure, temperature and oxygen concentration.

Clean and contamination-sensitive vacuum equipment

The low vapor pressure and absence of hydrocarbon base oil make Y LVAC 06/6 suitable for compatible systems where oil-vapor contamination must be controlled. Examples may include laboratory vacuum equipment, analytical instruments, optical processing and high-technology manufacturing.

Vacuum pumps operating at lower temperatures

With a typical pour point of −50°C, Y LVAC 06/6 offers better low-temperature flow than the higher-viscosity Y LVAC grades. This can be useful where cold start-up, low ambient temperature or rapid fluid circulation is important.

FAQ

1. What is Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6 used for?

It is used as a lubricating and sealing fluid in compatible vacuum pumps, particularly where low viscosity, chemical resistance, non-flammability or reduced hydrocarbon contamination is required.

2. Is Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6 flammable?

No. Fomblin® PFPE fluids have no flash point, fire point or autoignition point under standard test conditions.

3. Can Fomblin® Y LVAC 06/6 be used in every vacuum pump?

No. The required viscosity, pump clearances, operating speed, seals and temperature limits must be compatible with Y LVAC 06/6.

4. How long does it last in service?

There is no universal change interval. Fluid life depends on operating temperature, gas exposure, contamination, pump condition and maintenance. Oil condition and pump performance should be monitored regularly.

5. What is its shelf life?

Syensqo reports a shelf life of more than 20 years for Fomblin® PFPE fluids when stored under suitable conditions.
