What is Galden®?
Galden PFPE fluids are a family of inert, high-performance perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluids engineered to deliver exceptional reliability in demanding conditions. These fluorinated fluids combine outstanding dielectric strength with remarkable chemical stability, enabling consistent performance across an extensive temperature range—as low as -70°C to as high as 290°C (-94°F to 554°F). Their resilience in harsh environments makes them an ideal choice for a wide range of industrial applications.

A Strategic Alternative to 3M Fluids
Following 3M’s announcement to phase out PFAS-based products—including Novec™ and Fluorinert™ fluids—by the end of 2025, industries are actively seeking reliable alternatives.
Syensqo’s Galden® PFPE fluids have emerged as a leading replacement solution. With comparable or superior performance characteristics, they provide a seamless transition for applications previously reliant on 3M’s fluoropolymer products.
Thanks to their exceptional stability, wide operating temperature range, and inert nature, Galden® PFPE fluids are well-suited for critical applications in electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries. Their proven reliability helps minimize risks such as equipment failure, unplanned downtime, and reduced operational efficiency—ensuring long-term performance and sustainability.

Thermal Performance (Galden® HT Series)
Galden HT heat transfer fluids are specifically formulated for efficient thermal management. They feature boiling points spanning 55°C to 270°C (131°F to 518°F), offering a broader operating window compared to most conventional fluorinated heat transfer fluids. High Boiler (HB) grades, with boiling points between 170°C and 270°C, support stable operation at end-use temperatures up to 290°C.
Recommended operating ranges are determined by two key parameters:
- The lower limit, defined when viscosity reaches approximately 20 cP (11–12 cSt), aligning with standard pump capabilities.
- The upper limit, typically set 10°C below the fluid’s boiling point to ensure safe and stable performance.

Viscosity and Pour Point Characteristics
Viscosity reflects a fluid’s resistance to flow and varies with temperature—decreasing at higher temperatures and increasing at lower ones. This behavior directly impacts fluid circulation and system efficiency.
The pour point, defined as the lowest temperature at which a fluid remains flowable, is critical for low-temperature applications. A practical guideline is to fluids with a pour point at least 10°C below the minimum expected ambient temperature.
Galden® HT fluids offer exceptionally low pour points, ranging -66°C to -115°C (-76°F to -175°F), ensuring reliable flow even in extreme cold conditions.

Electrical Properties
Galden® PFPE fluids are widely valued for their superior dielectric performance. They exhibit a dielectric strength of up to 40 kV (at a 2.54 mm gap) and a high volume resistivity of approximately 1.5 × 10¹⁵ ohm·cm. These properties make them highly suitable for applications requiring electrical insulation and protection.
Fire Safety and Non-Flammability
One of the key advantages of Galden® PFPE fluids is their inherent safety. They are non-flammable and do not possess flash points, fire points, or auto-ignition temperatures. Certified by Factory Mutual and compliant with FM Standard 6930, these fluids meet stringent safety requirements for industrial use.
Material Compatibility
Galden® PFPE fluids are generally compatible with a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, and elastomers. However, compatibility may vary depending on formulation, operating conditions, and temperature fluctuations.
It is important to note that formulated materials (such as seals, gaskets, and hoses) may behave differently their base components. Therefore, real-world compatibility testing under actual operating conditions is strongly recommended to ensure long-term reliability.
